Heavy Vehicle Manufacturer

Modernizing the Control and Supervision System

A major heavy vehicle manufacturer, specializing in the production of trucks and buses, selected Altus solutions as the ideal technology to optimize the automation system of the test line at one of its production units in Europe.

Efficient Control System for the Test Line

To automate a long-duration testing platform within the heavy vehicle production line, a dedicated control panel was developed using programmable controllers from the Nexto System. Integrated with safety controllers featuring advanced functional safety capabilities and operator interfaces, the system ensured reliable and continuous monitoring of the test station responsible for inspecting the axles and wheels of the manufacturer’s vehicles.

For this application, the NX3010 CPU was selected as the main controller. Communication between the primary PLC, safety controllers, and HMI was established through the open MODBUS TCP protocol, enabling efficient and stable data exchange.

The architecture also incorporated analog and digital I/O modules installed in the Nexto rack, ensuring precise acquisition of field signals and accurate control of test parameters. Seamless integration with the supervisory system, combined with fast field data acquisition, was fundamental to achieving high reliability, traceability, and operational efficiency throughout the testing process.

The main feature that enabled the NX Series PLCs for this challenge was their ease and speed in project creation, primarily due to the programming languages based on the IEC 61131-3 standard and the high performance of their MODBUS TCP communication channel, which ensured low update times for all system data.

The project creation wizards and graphical configuration environment enabled the integrator to quickly get up to speed, allowing the project to be completed in a short time frame.
