Tamoios Tunnel Complex

Altus technology has automated all the tunnels on the Tamoios highway

Located in the eastern part of the state of São Paulo, the Tamoios Highway is one of the most modern and busiest roads in Brazil. Stretching 82 km, it connects the city of São José dos Campos, in the interior of the state, to the city of Caraguatatuba, located on the coast of São Paulo.

The highway complex is managed by the Tamoios concessionaire and plays a crucial role in transportation between the Paraíba Valley and the northern coast of São Paulo, serving as an important route for tourism and commerce in the region.

Contorno Tunnels also use Altus technology

The project aimed to duplicate a 33 km railway stretch and automate its five tunnels, significantly expanding operational capacity and enhancing system reliability.

The scope of the control and supervision project included the supply of automation and electrical panels, covering medium-voltage (MV) panels, motor control centers (MCCs), pump panels, and other related assemblies. It also encompassed the installation of circuit breakers, disconnect switches, protection relays, and the complete development and delivery of the electrical design documentation.

To address the complexity of the systems and subsystems involved, a large-scale distributed architecture was engineered, comprising more than 38,000 I/O points and over 250 high-performance CPUs. This robust infrastructure ensures high processing capacity, redundancy, and real-time supervision across the entire network.

The solution also incorporated complementary communication and control devices supplied by Altus, including industrial Ethernet switches, power meters, and full panel infrastructure, delivering an integrated, high-availability automation platform capable of supporting critical railway operations with safety and efficiency.

Conformal coating for extra protection

Conformal coating for extra protection

As the Tamoios complex is located in a coastal area, tropicalization of the electronic circuits is essential to protect the products against corrosion caused by salt spray. Another particular characteristic of the environment is the high temperature inside the tunnels, which can reach up to 55 °C.

The conformal coating applied to the Nexto Series products also acts as a protective barrier to prevent damage caused by such conditions.

High availability hot-standby redundancy

Due to their ability to deliver high performance and high availability, the redundant Nexto NX PLCs were chosen as the solution for overall control and monitoring of the tunnels and power substations along the stretch.

The panel and high-availability system complex used in the Contorno project features hot-standby redundancy architectures based on NX3030 CPU technology.

In this project, 250 CPUs of this model were implemented to control lighting systems, barrier gates, traffic lights, public address systems, and CCTV, responsible for monitoring the roadway cameras. The NX3008 PLCs are also responsible for the fire protection system, where they operate as Ethernet remote I/O devices under the control of the redundant controllers.

In this architecture, they act on alarm subsystems as well as pump and jet fan actuation.
