Bundle Tying System

Altus supplied the control and supervision technology for the system responsible for tying and weighing the rebar bundles produced in the rolling mill stands.

The solution ensures precise bundle formation, accurate weight measurement, and seamless integration with the plant’s production flow, enhancing traceability, operational efficiency, and quality control throughout the rolling process.

Gerdau Aço Norte Bundle Tying System

This system utilizes Altus PLC technology to manage and coordinate the entire tying process with precision and reliability.

Chain conveyors transport the cold-cut bundles to an elevator, which lifts a predefined quantity of rebars to the tying and strapping station. At this stage, the twisters are precisely positioned and, upon operator command, twist a special wire around the bundles to form a secure looped knot, an essential step for safe handling and final product loading. The number of twists is configured through an Altus HMI, providing flexibility and operational control.

After all twisters complete the tying operation, the elevator automatically lowers the secured bundle onto a second chain conveyor. An overhead crane then collects a predefined number of bundles for storage or direct loading onto trucks, ensuring a streamlined, automated workflow from production to dispatch.

Key benefits of the new system

Key benefits of the new system

One of the main benefits of the new system is the streamlined sequencing of the bundle tying and weighing operations. In addition to providing more precise control over the entire product flow, the system operates autonomously, using hydraulic twisters to perform the task. This eliminates the need for operator involvement, boosting safety and minimizing the risk of accidents.
